Harley Wright, a welder at Eeb Construction, found her passion in the trades after trying out traditional education. She discovered a natural affinity for welding in trade school and was drawn to iron working for its role in building up America. Wright encourages others, especially women, to pursue trades, emphasizing the importance of following one’s heart and persevering despite doubts from others.
Hi, my name is Harley Wright. I am a welder with Eeb Construction. I’m very hands-on. I don’t like to be still for too long, so school was a little bit of a struggle for me. I did try to go to college and it didn’t work out. I found a trade school and I really enjoyed taking classes, welding classes. It kind of came naturally to me and it was just something that it was fun to learn.
I came across iron working and so I started looking into that and I thought that that would be something I’d really enjoy. I think it would be really cool to be able to help build America, help build structures, and just stuff like that. It’s a really important job, so you don’t want to make somebody feel like just because you don’t succeed at college, you’re going to fail a life because that’s not true. You can get an apprenticeship and learn skills that way. You can find a trade school like I did.
Some advice I would give other women interested in the trades would be just do it. People can either be very supportive and respectful of you, and then there’s also going to be people who doubt you, and I think if you just keep going and you just do what’s in your heart, can do anything you want. Build up Kansas.
